VERANSTALTUNGEN: Reclaiming the State. How to create Equality in Europe

It is a common belief, especially amongst progressives, that the solution to Europe's existential crisis lies in the creation of a fully-fledged political union or federation: a "United States of Europe". But is such an evolution feasible? And more importantly: is it desirable? Or would the noble objective of European cooperation be better served by a more light-weight construction: a confederation of European sovereign states that respects the specificity of each country while fostering the conditions for regional and international collaboration on the most pressing challenges of our time?
